Reviving My Volvo's Original Stereo, The Dumbest Way Possible

Ever since I first started driving, I always hated aftermarket stereos.

They’re visually obnoxious, they clash with the stock interior, and they’re usually installed by unqualified 16-year-olds in their step-mom’s driveway.

When my 740 Turbo’s original radio went on the blink, I knew I had to get it up and running again. It came factory with an 8-band equalizer, for Christ’s sake.

This is not a fix I’m proud of, per se, but it is a fix nonetheless.

Happy wrenching, fam.

I agree with you about aftermarket stereos. Unless you hide it or really change the factory center console up to integrate it, they just look out of place. The volume button on my Miata finally became unmanageable. My solution was simpler: remove it, save weight lol. Made a blanking plate out of cardboard and light sheet  foam

Could’ve gotten a 1-din drawer/storage hole and gained some useful space out of it too :D

Aftermarket radios often stick   out like a sore thumb, but I’ve been using them to upgrade from old tape decks to CD players with AUX and/or USB input, so they’ve always been worth it.

That said, I’m really happy with the Pioneer unit that I managed to find for my Mustang. It has dull black trim that matches my dash much better than glossy units I’ve used in the past. And the display color is customiz able to match the stock dash illumination.

Only thing I don’t like about it is the main volume knob. It’s a rotary encoder that operates multiple functions, and has a slow response time. I can’t just flick my wrist 1/4 turn or whatever to instantly pu t the volume where I want it . It has to be turned slowly so that it will recognize each click of the knob. Turning it too fast will  adjust the volume by only a few levels.

The only useful space in a race car is the drivers seat and the engine bay.

Ha! My MX-5 has a blanking plate and no stereo too :)

That doesn’t look too bad in your application! I had a FUSION unit in my Feroza which was similarly discreet and I didn’t hate it too much.

It also had that horrible encoder problem though. Give me buttons, or, ideally, a proper analog knob. WAY better.

So I’ve actually got an original stereo ready to sub in, but I’m gonna need to rewire everything because it’s been butchered by previous owners. Keen, though.
